The College’s financial performance since it became an Agency/Trading Fund has been satisfactory. In each year since 1992 there has been a deficit of expenditure over income, accounting by 31 March 1997 to an accumulated retained deficit of £10.3m. In March 1997 the Government announced a financial reconstruction of the College Trading Fund. In return for a grant of £13.5m enabling the College to repay the Deemed Loan element of the original capital debt. so relieving it of £1.3m worth of interest payments a year) the College will be required over the next five years to work towards a position where it will be breaking even. year on year, without any further grant support from the Home Office.
In the meantime, a reducing level of grant support will be made to the College by the Home Office to support the training provision to the United Kingdom Fire Service. Throughout its period as an Agency, the academic side of the College’s work has been very successful, and the targets relating to student performance and attainment have been consistently exceeded. Since then the level of income from this sector has remained static, but efforts are being made in this financial year to increase this income to £3m per year. In accordance with both general government and specific Home Office policy, the College normally pays its suppliers within 30 days of receiving an invoice. In September 1996, the evaluation questionnaire completed by students was completely revised. It is now more sharply focused on educational issues and provides better quality information on performance.
The College costs approximately £16m a year to run. It directly employs 258 staff, including 67 officers seconded from United Kingdom fire brigades. The level of demand for passport services between April and October 1997 was 33% higher than the predicted figure on which the Agency’s resources and staffing plans were based.

The seniors’ Housing Action Plan was developed based on information from seniors, through the Whitehorse Seniors’ Housing Survey, the community housing studies, and the Yukon Seniors’ Housing Conference.
The Yukon government is committed to improving seniors’ housing options. We are also committed to improving access to support and services. These are the things that help seniors remain in their homes and also help to meet their changing needs. A report which includes 31 recommendations for improving legal aid in the Yukon has, the review was jointly commissioned by the Yukon government and the Board of the Yukon Legal Services Society. The Department of Justice has contributed an additional $287,781 to the Yukon Legal Services Society, to assist with the group’s accumulated deficit. Buckway has also noted that there is a pressing need to direct any additional funds to improve access to legal aid in family law situations. To respond to this need, an additional $300,000 will be directed, with the agreement of the Legal Services Society, to the area of family law matters.
